What do wombats and CDS Vic have in common? More than you might think!
Debbie from Hampton Park has a strong interest in sustainability and a soft spot for wombats. She’s been picking up litter for years on her daily dog walks though the local wetlands.
When Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme launched, Debbie saw an opportunity to turn her efforts into something with even more impact – she could pick up litter and get paid for it! And she could use the money to help sick wombats.
Debbie has been collecting containers since December 2023 and has so far donated over $300 of container refunds to Mange Management, a charity that treats wild wombats suffering from mange.
Debbie was inspired to donate to Mange Management after reading an article about how wombats can get sick with mange, which is fatal to the wombat if left untreated.
Debbie’s fundraising for wombats has also encouraged other people and local businesses to get involved. Gembrook’s Station House Pizzeria has been contributing its containers, as well as Debbie’s family, friends and local kids from the school where she works. “Once people know the money is going to help the wombats, they’re happy to donate their containers,” Debbie said.
Debbie stores the containers at her home in a wheelie bin before taking them to the CDS Vic Hallam depot for a refund. At last count, Debbie and her team had returned more than 3,000 containers – a fantastic effort for the environment and for the wombats!
Manage Management said they were very grateful for Debbie’s efforts as donations help them to buy more medication for the wombats, adding that the wombats and they appreciate everyone who donates to them through CDS Vic!
